“I want to make beautiful things, even if nobody cares, as opposed to ugly things. That’s my intent.”
— Saul Bass

Ever since the first EGD lesson, I've been taking note of some of the things that could help me in my daily life, like taking pictures which are more pleasant to look at. One of those things is the rule of thirds. Simply stated, the rule of thirds does not encourage you to place the focus of the picture or editorial in the middle; instead, follow some horizontal and vertical lines which divide the picture into 9 equal parts, as shown in the picture above that I took while on a ferry.

I captured this photo using the camera on my phone (Blackberry Q5). Much to my convenience, my phone camera has this option where you can display grid lines as you're taking pictures. This setting also happens to be something I changed right after we learned about the rule of thirds. For this picture, I had positioned the buoy around one of the intersections. I like how the orange pops out in the midst of all the blue. Hopefully I'll be able to take more pictures like these without having to refer to the grid lines someday.

Naturally, while you're on a holiday, you tend to take many pictures and I've been making a conscious effort to apply the rule of thirds as I'm taking pictures. This one turned out well in my opinion, considering my photography skills (which is at a very very low level, currently).
